
Members of Local 1537 presented a check for $1,000 to the Anacortes Parks Foundation Tuesday to support rebuilding the Tommy Thompson Parkway Trestle, which was severely damaged by fire on October 15, 2009.
Soon after the fire, the Anacortes Parks Foundation began a fundraising campaign for repairs, with a goal of reopening the trestle this spring. More information is available on how you can help by visiting the Parks Foundation WEBSITE.
Members of the Anacortes area community helped the Fidalgo Island Firefighters Stairclimb team raise nearly $2,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphpoma research at a pancake breakfast fundraiser Saturday.
The event, held at the Anacortes Fire Department Station 1, gave visitors an opportunity to interact with local firefighters from the Anacortes Fire Department (Local 1537), Hope Island Fire Department, Mt Erie Fire Department, and Summit Park Fire Department, as well as try on a firefighter’s “bunker gear” and get an up-close look at fire department apparatus and equipment. The proceeds from the breakfast support the Fidalgo Island team’s participation in the Scott Firefighter Challenge- an annual stair climb at Seattle’s Columbia Center Tower, which draws firefighters from throughout Washington and raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. On Saturday, March 7, 2009 a fellow Fidalgo Island Firefighter Terry Bowen’s life was cut short after a courageous battle with leukemia. One year to the date, On Sunday, March 7, 2010, a team of Fidalgo Island firefighters participating in the Scott Firefighter Stair Climb will race up the stairs of the Columbia Center Tower in full fire gear and SCBA in memory of Bowen, a long-time firefighter with Mt. Erie Fire Department (Skagit County Fire District 11). Read more »

At their monthly meeting on Thursday, December 17, the members present of the Anacortes Fire Fighters local voted unanimously to donate $1000 to the effort to repair the Tommy Thompson Trestle.
The trestle, part of the popular Tommy Thompson Trail, sustained serious damage during a mid-day fire on October 15. The cause of the fire has been deemed suspicious, and continues to be under investigation. Read more »
