On Saturday, March 7, 2009 a fellow Fidalgo Island Firefighter Terry Bowen’s life was cut short after a courageous battle with leukemia. One year to the date, On Sunday, March 7, 2010, a team of Fidalgo Island firefighters participating in the Scott Firefighter Stair Climb will race up the stairs of the Columbia Center Tower in full fire gear and SCBA in memory of Bowen, a long-time firefighter with Mt. Erie Fire Department (Skagit County Fire District 11).

At 788 feet of vertical elevation, the Columbia Center in downtown Seattle, stands as the second tallest building west of the Mississippi. It takes 69 flights of stairs and 1,311 steps to reach the highly acclaimed observation deck overlooking the city. This year, over 1,500 firefighters from 300 different departments are expected to compete in the event, making it the single largest firefighting competition in the world.

The fourteen-member Fidalgo Island Firefighters Team represents the Anacortes Fire Department (IAFF Local 1537), Skagit County Fire District 11, and Skagit County Fire District 13.

Join Us For Breakfast!  A pancake breakfast fundraiser will be held Saturday, February 13th from 9-11am at the Anacortes Fire station #1, located at 1016 13th Street. Donations will be requested for breakfast, and visitors will have opportunities to try on firefighting gear, while firefighters, in full combat gear will perform a simulated stair climb to display how physically demanding this challenge will be.  50-50 and t-shirt raffle tickets will be available and drawn during the event.
